This season of the BBC Proms with use its July 31st concert to celebrate the work of Stephen Sondheim to celebrate his 80th birthday. The Proms are an annual classical music event in the UK and this year they will take place at the Royal Albert Hall between July 16th and September 11th.
Sondheim at 80 will feature Bryn Terfel, Maria Friedman and Simon Russell Beale, along with singers from the BBC Performing Arts Fund, performing the extracts from Sweeney Todd (billed on the Proms website as a horror-opera!) , A Little Night Music, Into the Woods, Company, Pacific Overtures and Sunday in the Park with George. The concert will be directed by Martin Duncan, with David Charles Abell conducting the BBC Concert Orchestra. The BBC Proms will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and on television channel BBC2.
