Musical Theatre Advent Calendar: A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum really has nothing to do with Christmas. Well, I suppose certain aspects of Christmas could be described as jolly and this is a very jolly musical. There we go. Tenuous link forged. I chose A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum today because this is the time of the month when people are waiting for their Christmas holidays to begin and need a bit of a diversion – and this show offers plenty of diversion: a highly entertaining score by Stephen Sondheim, a chorus of beautiful women and some great laughs – all inspired by the classical Roman comedies of Plautus. Sadly, the film version is mediocre, which is a great pity. But if you have not given the cast album of this show a spin recently, do it now! And if you do not own a cast album of this show – then get one now so that you can give it a spin. A great silly smile will wriggle its way onto your face and you will have a better day.
