March 2012 at Musical Cyberspace is all about songs with people’s names in the title.

“All For Laura”, from The Woman in White, features music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by David Zippel. The show aims to translate the grand richness of a Benjamin Britten opera to the musical theatre stage, but unfortunately ends up floundering in Wildhorn-isms thanks to Charlotte Jones’s meandering book and Zippel’s flaccid lyrics. This song, a defining moment for Marian, is a case in point: the character development is implied in the musical break of this song rather than in partnership with the lyrics. A pity.
