March Monikers: “Lily’s Eyes”

March 2012 at Musical Cyberspace is all about songs with people’s names in the title.

One of the most popular songs from The Secret Garden, “Lily’s Eyes” tells the story of two brothers who were in love with the same woman, who lost her when she died and who have now seen that Mary, Lily’s niece and the ward of her widower, has her eyes. The phrase unfortunately always makes me thing that the child, like Harry Potter, who possessed another Lily’s eyes, is carrying around a pair of eyeballs on her person. Fortunately the song in context is lush and beautiful enough to distract one from such wayward thoughts.
